FoodTrust farmers lead the way in environmental responsibility and sustainability. Using standards beyond those required by provincial regulations, FoodTrust potato producers must meet stringent standards, including the use of Environmental Farm Plans (EFP), three-year crop rotations, field buffer zones, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques. If, for instance, a particular pesticide is put on a USDA or Agriculture Canada watch list, FoodTrust will automatically review its use. To date, 26 farmers have qualified for FoodTrust licences.
Currently, FoodTrust farmers influence production on some 3,000 acres of land on the island. Not only are their potatoes gentler on the land and the water, the FoodTrust farmers receive a premium for taking time to become stewards of the environment.
FoodTrust producers care about the land they till. The acres of red soil provide them with their living and the nearby watersheds offer recreation and beauty. This is why FoodTrust producers demonstrate a strong commitment to preserving the environment with sustainable farming practices. Truly, for them, growing well is a way of life - a quality they share by example.
